If it is a personal reply - if a significant portion of the list would have no interest in seeing the post - do NOT send your post to the list. Send it to just the person/people you want to see the post. Make sure you know where your post is going to.

Your post _must_ be on-topic: tap & jazz dance related topics _only_. If the thread starts out being tap or jazz dance related but moves onto another topic, take it private or to another list/newsgroup.

********************************************** Excessive quoting should be avoided. By that I mean, your message should include a significant amount of new text as compared to old text (from previous messages). Someone's .sig said it best: "Only relevant material quoted to preserve bandwidth." If your new text is buried w/in old text, then folks frequently won't bother to find it. ***********************************************

Also - please try to keep each line of text in your message under 80 characters. Messages having more than that are hard to read because the text wraps around to the next line and ends abruptly on that line.

Make sure your subject line is as good as possible a one line summary of your post. Just mentioning someone's name is not a good subject line. This is not a good subject line: Subject: Jimmy T. Jones This is a much better subject line: Subject: Wanted: info on tap teacher Jimmy T. Jones

Posts to the tap-jazz list must be ASCII only - remember that your post is going to lots of different types of mailers. Most of them understand only the most basic type of mail. You should not include attachments unless all attachments are in ASCII (i.e. Word & other word processor documents are not appropriate as attachments) NonASCII mail will be bounced back to you for removal of the nonASCII material.

****** THIS NEXT PART IS ** EXTREMELY ** IMPORTANT ************* This is partially from the rec.arts.dance FAQ - it applies to the tap-jazz list as well: : This is a great forum to help dancers hook up with one another, whether : for workshops, competitions, instruction, or simply finding a place to : dance in a city you will be visiting.

: This group is _not_ for commercial use. Advertising for profit (as : opposed to occasional recommendations by actual dancers) is _not_ : welcome. On the other hand, announcements of competitions, exhibition : and special events are appropriate, even if they are for profit. If you : are a for-profit dance person and you really really really want the net : to know about your existence, you may post a short and to the point note : _once_ with an email address or web site where people can obtain further : information. If you participate in the discussions w/o advertising your product, more people will see your url (which, hopefully, you will have added to your signature)

The list is accessible via two addresses: tap-jazz@world.std.com and tap-jazz@facteur.std.com

Use either one or the other, but _not_ both. If you use both, the list will receive 2 copies of your post. Make sure you know where your reply is going to.

tap-jazz-approval@world.std.com is _not_ the address of this list - it is one of my administrative addresses. Do not send posts to this address. I do not guarrantee that they'll get posted to the list. This is the address that is listed in the Sender: line of the headers in posts from the tap-jazz list. ============ Some mailers (notably MS Mail) use this address to reply to even though there is an actual valid Reply-To: address in the headers (the list address), so therefore you must be sure that your mailer is replying to the correct address. ============

Please be considerate of others when posting - don't send stuff to the list that you think wouldn't be of interest to a whole bunch of people.

Thanks,
